The Round Gown was a fashionable and practical garment worn throughout much of the 18th century, gaining particular popularity in the later decades. Unlike other gown styles of the period, the round gown was constructed as a single garment rather than a gown worn over a separate petticoat, creating the appearance of a full ensemble with fewer layers.
As the style became increasingly fashionable in the late 18th century, the round gown offered a practical alternative to more heavily layered fashions while still maintaining an elegant appearance.
This gown is made from Hamilton Blue reproduction fabric from Colonial Williamsburg, a lightweight 100% cotton textile inspired by The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation’s collection.
The sleeves are cut slightly longer than many other gown styles of the period, extending lower on the forearm for additional coverage. The skirt drapes beautifully with or without skirt supports, making the round gown an unfussy and versatile option while still maintaining a polished period appearance.
To ensure the best fit, measurements must be taken while wearing stays, as this gown is designed to be worn with proper undergarments.
